Andrew Olle Memorial Trust
The Andrew Olle Memorial Trust funds research into the improved diagnoses and treatment of brain cancers. The trust is named after the much loved broadcast journalist who died at Royal North Shore Hospital after suffering a brain tumour in 1995. Funds raised from the trust have established the Australasian Brain Tumour Bank within the Kolling Institute of Medical Research at Royal North Shore Hospital. The tumour bank houses hundreds of samples of brain tumours for genetic testing and research. Current research has identified two genetic markers which have been found in patients with more aggressive brain tumours. Using these markers as an identification tool, clinicians can then plan the patient's treatment programs accordingly. In addition, research is also being undertaken to use human viruses to infect brain tumour cells. Is is hoped that these viruses will kill off the abnormal cancer cells while leaving the normal brain cells intact. Further support is very welcome.
