![]() CARE Australia CARE Australia was founded in 1987 and is today recognised as one of Australia’s largest overseas aid organisations. CARE seeks a world of hope, tolerance and social justice, where poverty has been overcome and people live in dignity and security. CARE currently works in 70 countries to fight poverty through long-term development projects and to respond to humanitarian emergencies, assisting over 65 million people every year. By working with governments and local partners, CARE helps poor and marginalized communities by providing access to improved nutrition, immunisations, awareness raising initiatives and prevention of infections such as HIV/AIDS; children’s education and adult training services; increased agricultural production and food security; environmental protection; water supply and sanitation systems; and economic activities which assist with income generation. Due to the disproportionate impacts poverty has upon women and girls, enhancing gender equality is the cornerstone of CARE’s assistance. We believe that supporting women and girls is one of the most effective ways to bring lasting change to poor communities. In responding to the different needs of each community, we ensure women’s voices are heard and work to remove barriers to women and girls’ full participation in economic opportunities. CARE Australia prides itself on maximizing the donations that reach overseas projects. In 2008, 88 per cent of donations were directly spent on CARE’s programs. The remaining 12 per cent was used for operational running costs including financial management, fundraising and community education.
