Dystonia Australia
Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes muscles to contract or spasm involuntarily. Dystonia is neither a psychological disorder, nor does it affect intellect. It can occur in any part of the body. Forms include: blepharospasm (eyes), cervical dystonia (neck), spasmodic dysphonia (vocal cords), writer's cramp (hand) and generalised dystonia (limbs, trunk and other areas). Dystonia affects men, women and children of all ages and backgrounds. It may be genetic or caused by physical trauma, exposure to certain medications or other neurological conditions. Our organisation aims to: provide vital information and support to people with dystonia and those that care for them; offer leadership and encouragement to existing and emerging support groups; improve general public awareness of this debilitating disorder; educate physicians and health professionals about the many forms of dystonia and treatments available; assist in research towards a cure as funds become available.
