Melbourne Zoo is the eleventh oldest zoo in the world, first opening in 1862. Today this modern zoo has strong regional conservation, research and education programs and is involved in international conservation projects in the Asian region At Werribee Open Range Zoo visitors are able to observe exotic African animals including rhino, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, lions and hippos in natural settings through a number of modalities including exhibits, open vehicles, canoe tour and overnight slumber safaris. Healesville Sanctuary, is renowned as one of the best places to see Australian animals in their natural habitats. For 70 years the Sanctuary has played a leading role in the long-term care and protection of Australian wildlife. Visitors can experience a real-life animal rescue centre and hospital.
