Hutt Street Centre is the service face of homelessness in Adelaide. Established by the Daughters of Charity in 1954 we offer a broad range of essential supports including meals and bathroom facilities, professional support and case management, a health clinic, education and training program and extensive visiting services to adults who are homeless and vulnerable or at risk of homelessness Hutt Street Centre is managed by a Board of Directors which includes representation by the Daughters of Charity. Initially HSC was established to provide care to the poor, in particular those men who were sleeping rough in the South Parklands in Adelaide. We now provide 54,000 meals a year and see about 200 people each day. In October 2010 Hutt Street Centre was granted the NAHA Eastern Generic Homelessness Service funding which will fund the Centre's social work and case management program. HSC also receives HACC funding for an Aged City Living program which provides support to older people who have or are experiencing homelessness. Recently Hutt Street Centre intitiated an Education and Training Program (EaT) to respond to the needs of a large percentage of people who have substandard levels of literacy. Volunteers offer one-to-one literacy classes as well as training in computers, photography, art, music, gardening and story telling and writing. This program has had great success with a number of its participants using their new skills and confidence to move off the streets into public housing. Hutt Street Centre relies on the generosity of the community, volunteers and regular donors to operate its essential services and the EaT program. Funds are raised through events, appeals and campaigns, regular donations, corporate workplace giving programs and specific fundraising initiatives.
